Palm Pre lands on Best Buy website… for $849

Retail

As if we didn’t see this one coming, the Palm Pre has made its official debut on Best Buy’s website. The handset is sporting a super-high $849 price tag which is apparently a deterrent. With a shortage of handsets “expected at launch”, Best Buy supposedly wants to discourage Best Buy employees and any other customers from buying the handset at full retail. We will see how this shakes out as the launch date draws closer.

Thanks, anonymous and jeff!

Best buy sells the old ass sprint curve for 749 the damn centro is 520.. They dont want you buying phones without a contract.. Its simple they probably have good deals from the carriers so they take the rebate off the top automatically and they dont want your business if you arent going to get a new contract.. Unless you will pay several hundred dollars more than the phone is worth..

Lmao like 90% of you guys have no clue what your talking about this shit is hilarious.. Just be a good consumer and watch commercials than buy things.. Dont hurt your brain trying to figure out corporate marketing..

    @ Celz

You are exactly right. BB wants you to sing a contact because that is how they get paid. If you don’t want to sing a contact thay are going to make up that difference by jacking up the out-right price by $200 and see if someone is stupid enough to pay it. Also Sprint Pro (not Pre) is $699.99 and for some reason the old ass Treo 700 is $709.99.

On a side note this may be a typo by BB but it list “short videos” under the camera features.

    “Built-in 3.0MP digital camera
With LED flash and extended depth of field lets you take still photos and short videos.”

@Dan you shouldn’t be calling anyone stupid. You mis spelled “sign” both times and typed “sing” How do you sing a contract.

tahnks pq I’ll be srue to send all my bolg psots to yuo so yuo can porof raed them for me befoer I pots thme!

Even if you do a new activation, BB still charges tax on the retail price of the phone. That means 199.99 plus 80ish dollars worth of tax added on.

Buy from sprint for 300 plus tax, 30ish dollars, and then have to deal with the 100 dollar mail in rebate.

BB=simpler buy process but a little more expensive

sprint=a little cheaper but a pain in the ass.

    Happy shopping everybody.

Best Buy Mobile even listed the GSM Treo Pro, which was ONLY sold unlocked in the US, for $599….or $50 more than Palm was selling it for direct. Best Buy Mobile sucks.

    Lmao @ Dan

@ gquaglia Dan never called anyone stupid..

But everytime Best Buy drops a phone you people are surprised.. They dont do this because they are “crazy” or “stupid” or “mean” they do cellphones better than any non carrier so they have good reason..

High retail cost is PROBABLY to deter reselling the phone so that sprint’s contract customers can get it without spending $1,000 on craigslist (which people will still probably end up doing — but at least the resellers are making less money, and hopefully there’s a Pre for you and I avail when we walk in within a month of launch?

And, if i remember BBY Policy, Employees generally are not allowed to buy stock-constrained items from their store — My buddy is a Best Buy Mobile manager, and he went to the Apple store to buy an iPhone before they launched it in their stores, as employee purchase of the items (with or without contract) would result in termination or at least disciplinary action

There are some serious reviews about the Pre on BestBuys site already and the phone isn’t even out yet for the general public. Some good and some haters. Let the everyday people decide. I hope this phone turns out to be a success, then alot of people will have to shut their big mouths. This maybe the phone that gets me to renew my contract!!!!!!

lol iggy is VERY mad cause now it’ll take 2 paychecks plus the money he already saved up to buy one

  • IGGY

Nope, not mad. I work at a Sprint store and, unlike 95% of the gossip bitches in here, know what I’m talking about.

I’m sorry Taco Bell doesn’t pay you enough to afford the Pre, but there’s no need to project your issues onto me. LOL Run along now, junior.

  • ummm

I’m an employee and that is not true. When TOTAL is pressed, the phone is packaged out, and the taxes are adjusted accordingly to the price. You don’t pay taxes on the full retail price of the phone. If you or somebody you know DID get charged, yall are dumb asses, and need to go get a refund. I’ve been working @ BBY for 2 years and you only pay taxes on what you’re charged.

  • Tall Stacks

Everyone knows that Best Buy inflates the retail (full) cost of the phone to discourage customers from purchasing the phone without an upgrade or new activation. If they sell it outright, they basically get nothing. And they’ve just lost a Pre device they could have sold on a two-year agreement and made bank!

c’mon people… seriously. This is not the first time this has happened.
