It’s crazy to think how reliant we still are on printed documents in the digital age. Crazier still is the fact that people continue to spend a small fortune on printer ink. We recently told readers how to save 90% or even more when buying replacement ink cartridges for your printer, and we received a tremendous amount of positive feedback after running that article. But that strategy doesn’t address the second printer pain point that follows closely behind the cost of ink: The frequency with which people need to purchase ink refills.

Brother recently launched a series of “INKvestment” printers that pack longer-lasting ink cartridges, and now the company is pushing things a step further by adding two new affordable models that start at just $199.

Aimed at consumers and people with home offices, Brother’s new MFC-J985DW and MFC-J985DW XL bring the price of entry to its INKvestment line down under $300 for the first time ever. The former costs just $199 and prints black pages for less than a penny per page, while the latter runs $299 and can print for up to two years before you have to purchase additional ink cartridges.

Both printers use Brother’s special INKvestment ink cartridges, and they require only four cartridges at a time. One is a super high-yield black cartridge that costs $25 and prints up to 2,400 pages, and then there are three multi-color cartridges that print up to 1,200 pages and cost $15.

Here are some key details about these two new models:

“Regardless of brand of ownership, SoHo customers haven’t been shy with expressing their feelings about the price of ink and cartridge yields” Brother marketing boss Phil Lubell said. “The new line of Brother INKvestment all-in-ones were created so customers can spend less for more pages, helping reduce their pain point of printing costs while providing Super High-yield cartridges.”

The MFC-J985DW and MFC-J985DW XL are both available for purchase beginning immediately from leading retailers including Amazon, and we all know what to do with our old printers…
