Installments in this series typically focus on paid iOS and Android apps that are available for free for a limited time, but sometimes a regularly free app pops up that is so nifty we want to take a moment to bring it to your attention. Such is the case with Vhoto, a great free iPhone app that adds a simple but awesome feature to the iPhone’s camera.

Like just about every other stock camera app on the planet, Apple’s iPhone camera allows users to snap still photographs while recording videos. Of course video is great, but sometimes there’s a moment that translates even better in a photo.

But what happens if you miss that great moment?

Vhoto is a smart app that allows you to record video or import videos from your camera roll. It then analyzes the video content and pulls out the best frames, which can then be saved as still photos. This means that if you missed the perfect opportunity to grab a still while recording, Vhoto can go back and snatch it for you with the best possible quality.

Here are some more details from the app’s description:

+ FIND PHOTOS IN YOUR VIDEOS
Get photos AND videos of every moment. Use the Vhoto camera to record video, or import your existing videos. Vhoto’s Chooser looks at hundreds of still photos hidden inside your videos and finds you the best pics.

+ VHOTO – THE SMARTER CAMERA
Vhoto is the Smarter Camera – it learns what you like as you use it. Tap the screen while recording video to tell Vhoto to focus on that part of the shot. Turn the camera and Vhoto knows you’re interested in a new set of images. The more you use Vhoto, the better photos you’ll find! PLUS Vhoto’s new computer vision technology gets you great photos indoors and outdoors, in all lighting conditions.

+ EDIT PHOTOS
Vhoto offers a unique set of filters and editing options so you can get your perfect pics “just right”.

+ SAVE, SHARE and SEND
Save your photos to your camera roll. Share photos to Instagram, Facebook or Twitter. Send photos to your friends and family via email or text.

+ INTRODUCING – VHOTO SOCIAL
Vhoto’s new social network lets you find and follow hashtag topics featuring photos shared by other Vhoto users. Make your own hashtags, or follow the ones that interest you. Use Vhoto’s local channel to find out what’s trending near you. See the most popular photos and posters for every hashtag.

Vhoto is a free iPhone app and it can be downloaded from the App Store by following the link below in our source section.
