While Verizon and AT&T have traditionally been the two biggest players in the U.S., Sprint and T-Mobile have almost always been stuck behind in third and fourth place, respectively. However, T-Mobile’s big “Uncarrier” surge over the last year is threatening to shake up the traditional order and make it, not Sprint, America’s No. 3 wireless carrier.
While this sort of scenario would have been unthinkable a year ago, it won’t be too much longer before it becomes a reality if T-Mobile and Sprint keep having quarters like the ones they just reported on over the past week. While Sprint lost nearly half a million subscribers last quarter, T-Mobile continued to absolutely bludgeon the competition by adding a stunning 2.4 million net customers, including 1.8 million total postpaid additions.
Jan Dawson at Beyond Devices has put together a handy chart that tracks U.S. wireless carrier subscriber numbers over the past several quarters and as you can see, T-Mobile has really been coming on strong in the past year.
While both of these carriers are still a long way behind AT&T and Verizon, it does seem that T-Mobile has a lot of momentum right now and it’s certainly conceivable that one year from now it could be America’s No. 3 wireless carrier.
