The box of a new, never-before-seen Motorola handset that has model number XT1096 has been photographed in the wild, Android Central says. The mystery device is sporting Verizon branding and is definitely a pre-release unit, although it’s not clear what kind of smartphone is inside the box. However, given what we’ve been reading about Motorola’s upcoming handsets, we can guess it will be the next-gen Moto X+1 flagship device, a Moto G/E successor, or something entirely different.

“Please note: This device is a pre-commercial unit, owned by Verizon Wireless that cannot be activated on a Consumer or Employee personal account,” the warning message on the box’s sticker says. “It is considered highly Confidential and Proprietary Subject to Non-Disclosure,” says the end of message that’s visible on the side of the box.

Other details about the handset in the box aren’t available at this time.

Motorola is rumored to launch several new Android smartphones in the future, including flagship devices such as the Moto X+1 and the Motorola Nexus 6, Verizon-bound Droids, and new versions of its affordable handsets. However, it’s not clear when these devices are supposed to be unveiled or launched.

Various images allegedly showing unreleased Motorola handsets have hit the web recently, although it’s not clear whether they’re related to this XT1096 model or not.

The leaked image showing the box of this mystery Motorola handset follows below.
