Those of us who use Windows 8 on a desktop computer or on a laptop without a touch display are eagerly awaiting the release of Windows 10, which Microsoft has promised will bring back a lot of the desktop-centric features that we’ve missed since Windows 7. Earlier this year Microsoft revealed several enterprise-centric features for Windows 10 to whet our appetites and now The Verge reports that Microsoft is gearing up to show off key consumer-centric features in Windows 10 this January.

Other than reporting Microsoft plans to announced these new details in late January, however, The Verge doesn’t really give us a lot of information about what these new features will be. During its fall event, Microsoft emphasized the return of the full Start menu to Windows 10 and also the new Continuum feature that will automatically detect whether your device is hooked up to a keyboard and mouse and give you the Desktop UI without at all taking you to the Modern UI. This feature will also take you to “tablet mode” when you touch your display or, if you own a 2-in-1 PC-tablet hybrid, when you aren’t hooked up to a mouse and keyboard.
The Verge says that there will be a consumer preview of Windows 10 released in early 2015, so we should definitely have a better idea of what the new platform will offer by then.
