Intel is gearing up for a pretty big week. The chip manufacturer is set to officially unveil its next generation mobile processor, code-named Silverthorne. The Silverthorne chip platform is a low power x86-based chipset that is perfectly suited for the next generation of ultra-mobile devices. Its power consumption is remarkably low, sucking up only 0.6-2 watts of power, depending on how fast the clock is churning. The top end of the power spectrum will have this chip flexing at about 2.0 GHz which we might see by the summer. Nothing crazy, but certainly respectable for a processor designed with efficiency, rather that brute force, in mind. No word on when this will make its way into production devices, but we’d expect the turn-around to be relatively quick here.
