Last night marked the end of an era as Jon Stewart said goodbye as host of The Daily Show after 17 years. The satirical Comedy Central news show has ignited several careers over the years and one of its most successful offspring has been Stephen Colbert, who will be taking over David Letterman’s spot on CBS’s The Late Show this fall. For Stewart’s final appearance, Colbert returned to the show and paid an impromptu tribute to the man who gave him his start in the fake TV news business.

While Stewart clearly did not want to be thanked by Colbert, Colbert wasn’t having any of it.
“We owe you because we learned from you, we learned from you by example how to do a show with intention, how to work with clarity, how to treat people with respect,” Colbert said. “You are infuriatingly good at your job! And all of us who were lucky enough to work with you… for 16 years are better at our jobs because we got to watch you do yours.”
At this point Stewart started tearing up as Colbert thanked him for all his years of making us laugh.
