The first sentence of a support article posted on Amazon’s support site provides the meat and potatoes of today’s big announcement: “Eligible Kindle books can be loaned once for a period of 14 days.” Loans must be initiated from Amazon’s website — by entering the loanees name and email address — at which point a notification email is sent to the gifted party. The company notes that customers “can receive the book loan even if they do not yet have a Kindle or Kindle reading application.” Books are not available to be read by the book owner until the loan period has expired and the feature is currently only available in the United States.
