Taking the stage for a press event at GDC 2016 on Tuesday, Sony finally unveiled the price and release date for the PlayStation VR headset — a device which was originally known as Project Morpheus.
Although it was originally scheduled to launch in the first half of the year, Sony now says the PlayStation VR will launch in October for $399.

The final specifications for the device include a 5.7-inch OLED display, 1920 x 1080 resolution, 360 degree tracking sensors (as well as 9 LEDs), 100-degree field of view and compatibility with the DualShock 4 and PS Move controllers.
Sony also revealed that 50 games will be available for the VR headset before the end of the year. Several have already been announced, but others, including an exclusive Star Wars Battlefront VR experience, have yet to see the light of day. The Playroom VR, a collection of six games, will come as a free download.
This launch announcement follows that of the Oculus Rift and the HTC Vive, both of which will begin shipping to consumers within a month. As expected, the PS VR will cost less than both of its primary competitors, which come in at $599 and $799, respectively. Additionally, the headset won’t need an expensive computer.
“We believe PlayStation VR is best poised to deliver VR to the mainstream,” said SCE CEO Andrew House. “The future of gaming is here with PlayStation VR.”
