Marvel’s upcoming ensemble superhero series The Defenders is still several months away, but Entertainment Weekly had a chance to sit down with the cast and crew to discuss the upcoming show as it began shooting in Brooklyn this week. These are some of the first concrete details we’ve learned about the show.
In the magazine’s cover story, EW describes the scene in which the four heroes meet for the first time:
“Each Defender has arrived separately at the offices of Midland Circle (a name that should sound familiar to Daredevil fans as the shady operation behind a giant, literal plot hole in season 2), and none of them expected to cross paths. But before they can properly meet and greet, the four have wound up trapped in the middle of a corridor and must brawl their way past a group of enemies.”
If you’ve watched the three series that have aired so far (Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage), you know that these heroes would rather do things their own way, so Marvel’s TV team had to find a compelling reason to unite them. That reason turned out to be Sigourney Weaver’s Alexandra, an “utter badass” who will serve as the main antagonist of The Defenders. Showrunner Marco Ramirez says she’s a big enough threat to necessitate the team-up, but not too big for the cozy world Marvel has built on Netflix.
As for whether or not we might see The Defenders cross over with The Avengers on either the big screen or the small screen, Marvel TV head Jeph Loeb says the following: “If the story warrants it, we will obviously do our best to have folks cross into each other’s story lines.”
The Defenders will hit Netflix at some point this summer.
