You’ve probably seen the latest Star Wars, J.J. Abrams’ Star Wars: The Force Awakens at least once since its debut on December 18th, so you’re probably not surprised to hear it’s been doing rather well at the box office – and if you haven’t done so, you should totally see it. Highly praised in reviews, Episode VII started breaking box office records well ahead of its release, with millions of moviegoers around the world preordering tickets for the film well in advance of its premiere.
But after three weekends, The Force Awakens is getting close to becoming the biggest-grossing movie of all time in America, shattering previous records held by Titanic, Avatar and other Star Wars movies.

The Force Awakens grossed $88.3 million in the third weekend domestically, Forbes reports. That’s a 17-day total of $740.266 million. Comparatively, James Cameron’s Titanic needed 86 days to pass $460 million total gross of Star Wars. Avatar, meanwhile, needed 47 days to pass the $600 million mark of Titanic. The news site estimates that by day 19th, or Tuesday, The Force Awakens might become the biggest grossing film of all time in the U.S.
It’ll be the first time in eighteen years since a movie not directed by James Cameron will be the top-grossing film of all time in America, Forbes says. Moreover, for the first time in 40 years, a film that’s not directed by Cameron, George Lucas or Steven Spielberg will be atop of the list.
When it comes to worldwide revenue, Avatar and Titanic have grossed $2.788 billion and $2.186 billion, respectively. The Force Awakens has so far grossed $1.510 billion in total worldwide sales, passing Avengers: Age of Ultron ($1.405 billion) and nearing Furious 7 ($1.515 billion), The Avengers ($1.519 billion) and Jurassic World ($1.66 billion).
