AppleInsider is reporting

that the next-gen iPhone 6s models will reportedly see significant performance improvements thanks to the inclusion of 2GB of RAM. Current iPhone models sport 1GB of RAM, and while that’s certainly enough to provide zippy performance, an extra gig of memory will only make the overall user experience that much better. Just as important, it gives developers the ability to really push their iOS apps to the next level.

The AI report reads in part:

A person familiar with Apple’s future product plans, who has provided reliable information in the past, indicated to AppleInsider that the so-called “iPhone 6s,” and presumably the Plus version as well, will in fact be upgraded to 2 gigabytes of RAM. Apple has used a single gigabyte of RAM in its iPhone lineup dating back to the iPhone 5, which launched in 2012.

The report further adds that Apple is currently exploring the idea of including Apple SIM cards on its fleet of next-gen iPhones. Recall that Apple first introduced an Apple SIM card when it rolled out the iPad Air 2, thereby enabling users to purchase 4G equipped tablets without having to find a device specifically made for one carrier in particular. It’s worth noting, though, that Apple explored this idea in the past only to face stiff resistance from carriers who threatened not to subsidize the cost of the iPhone at all.

A November 2010 report from The Telegraph reads:

The Californian technology giant had been working on plans to create an integrated SIM card so that consumers could buy the phone without having to sign up to operators’ long-term contracts.

A senior source at a mobile operator said: “Apple has long been trying to build closer and closer relationships and cut out the operators. But this time they have been sent back to the drawing board with their tails between their legs.”

Now, in 2015, it’ll be interesting to see if the dynamics of the smartphone industry now fall in Apple’s favor. While some carriers are likely perturbed at the influence Apple now wields in the smartphone industry, the iPhone is now so big and popular that some carriers risk standing up to Apple at their own peril.

What’s intriguing about Apple’s upcoming iPhone models is that we still don’t know how Apple plans to differentiate them from current models, aside from the expected internal spec bumps. In contrast, last year at this time the rumor mill was already aflush with reports pointing to larger screened iPhone models.
