After a few misfires due to some dodgy-sourced reports made their way across the Symbian blogosphere last week, we now have word the that highly anticipated v21 firmware update is beginning to trickle out. So far only Nokia Service Centers can grant you access to the new firmware and only certain Euro and Middle Eastern product codes are eligible. Expect to see the update available soon via Nokia Software Updater (NSU) however, and available to a much wider range of product codes. 21.0.016 adds some well-awaited functionality and thankfully we actually have a change log this time around! Highlights:
- Flash Lite 3 support added (Flash content in the S60 Browser!)
- Widget (Web runtime) support added
- General stability improvements
- Improvements to BT headset interoperability
- Switch from landscape to portrait mode & screen rotations improvements
- Image rotation improvement in album view
- Gallery & Slideshow performance improvements
- Improvement to Java application start
- Improvement to Navigate To-function when started from search application
There’s a bunch more but all signs point to improved performance and speed. To clarify, this update applies only to the N95-1; as in the original European N95. Early adopters here in the US who still haven’t moved onto the NAM version will be serviced but the rest of use still have to sit here twiddling our N95 NAM-owning thumbs. No demand paging, no Web runtime, no in-browser Flash support… Ugh.
