It also equals the total number of messages sent in England during all of 1999. My my, how times have changed. According to the BBC, there are several reasons why SMS is such a popular option for Brits, including convenience, ease of use, ubiquity, and price. We’re pretty sure that the latter is the most significant, especially given the incredibly high voice tariff’s that most European wireless customers are forced to pay. Despite its relative value when compared to voice calls, SMS messages are a notoriously profitable service for carriers, so it look like everyone wins here, right?
