A couple of weeks ago, iPhone owners the world over started receiving odd text messages from their mischievous friends — texts which promptly shut down their devices. This bizarre bug had something to do with how banner notifications process Unicode text, which is what appears in the odd string of text.
“Apple seeded the fourth beta of iOS 8.4 to developers yesterday with a fix for [the] messaging bug,” reports MacRumors. Whether or not this fix will hit our devices before iOS 8.4 official launches on June 30th remains to be seen, but one would assume this is a high priority issue for the company.
As MacRumors notes, the bug also affects the Mac and the Apple Watch, as well as various third-party messaging apps including Snapchat and Twitter. Until you’re given the all clear from Apple, don’t start sending the message out to your friends again to see if the issue has been fixed yet.
