How rugged are the new Galaxy S6 edge and HTC One M9 when it comes to accidental drops? Will they break when dropped from various heights flat on their faces? YouTube channel TechRax decided to answer these questions by dropping both devices from approximately 5 feet in the air from various angles onto hard surfaces.

No matter how durable smartphones appear to be, some of these accidental drops will be fatal. This is especially true for the screen, which will often get scratched or shatter depending on how it lands on impact.

Even though a previous Galaxy S6 edge test suggested the smartphone will survive brutal drops, that doesn’t appear to be the case in the following video, as the Galaxy S6 edge receives plenty of damage, especially when dropped on the back and on the front.

The same YouTube channel put the HTC One M9 through the same torture test. Unlike the Galaxy S6 models, which have front and rear glass panels, the HTC One M9 has an aluminum case that should make it even stronger.

However, as you can see in the second video below, the aluminum body will not protect the HTC One M9’s screen when dropped on a hard surface, so don’t be surprised to see its screen shatter as well in certain types of accidental drops. Maybe that UH-OH protection might come in handy after all.

The conclusion seems to be that both devices can and will be damaged if you’re not paying attention when using them, so it might be a good idea to get cases and screen protectors for added security.
