Verizon Wireless lights up 4G LTE in nine new markets, expands footprint in five cities

Verizon Wireless on Thursday confirmed that its 4G LTE network is now available in Mobile and Montgomery, Alabama; Greater Fairfield and New Haven, Connecticut; Gainesville Pensacola and Tallahassee Florida; Fayetteville-Lumberton, North Carolina; and Bryan-College Station and Temple-Killeen, Texas. The nation’s largest wireless carrier also said that it’s expanding the 4G footprint that is already available in Atlanta, Chicago, Denver, New Orleans, and Philadelphia, to cover more customers. Verizon’s chief technical officer, David Small, said that Verizon’s 4G LTE network is now available in 55 metropolitan areas and that the carrier plans to expand its 4G LTE footprint to match its entire 3G coverage area by the end of 2013. MetroPCS lights up LTE service in Boston, New York City, and Sacramento

Early this morning, the nation’s fifth largest cellular provider — MetroPCS — announced three new cities now incorporated into its LTE fold: Boston, New York City, and Sacramento. The company currently has one LTE mobile handset offering, the Samsung Craft, and has LTE talk and data plans starting at $55 (including taxes and fees).

“As the only no annual contract, pay-in-advance wireless service provider offering 4G LTE services, we continue to build our network to allow more customers to experience our unparalleled value and flexible, affordable service,” said Roger D. Linquist, MetroPCS’ president, chairman, and CEO. “By offering customers the ability to do more with easy access to their social networks, exclusive MetroSTUDIO content and expanded web browsing capabilities, we are giving our customers what they need – a way to stay connected, without sacrificing time or money.”

MetroPCS is now offering its LTE services in nine major metropolitan areas: Dallas-Fort Worth, Detroit, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Boston, New York City and Sacramento. More →

Sprint launches WiMAX network in six additional cities

Early this morning, U.S. Wireless carrier Sprint announced it has blanketed Los Angeles, Miami, Washington D.C., Cleveland, Cincinnati and Columbus, Ohio with its WiMAX network. “With the addition of these six markets, Sprint 4G is now available in 68 markets across the country, including Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Houston and New York City,” reads the press release. Sprint also announced “that it expects to launch the San Francisco market – home to Silicon Valley and thousands of tech enthusiasts – on Dec. 28.” If you’re located in any of the aforementioned cities, and have a Sprint 4G enabled device, let us know what kind of speeds you’re seeing. Yesterday in New York City, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer officially unveiled his company’s next generation mobile operating system, Windows Phone 7. The mobile device arena is a crowded space — with well established systems from Apple, Google, and Research In Motion already in the market — but Microsoft made a big splash by announcing nine new handsets that will be available in the coming months (both in the U.S. and abroad). Microsoft has posted the keynote presentation from yesterday’s event for those who want to see and hear, first hand, just what the Redmond company has been up to. Microsoft and AT&T have October 11 Windows Phone 7 event planned

Here’s an interesting development, it looks like AT&T and Microsoft will be holding a Windows Phone 7 event on October 11. Despite Microsoft’s own website billing the “Worldwide Launch Event” for 3:00 PM on October 11 with T-Mobile in tow, we’ve just been sent an invitation to a 9:30 AM October 11th event; complete with appearances by Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer and AT&T CEO Ralph de la Vega. Looks like AT&T may be the exclusive launch partner for Windows Phone 7 after all… even if it is only for a few hours.

Windows Phone 7 worldwide launch one week from today, on T-Mobile

Despite all the talk about AT&T being Microsoft’s exclusive U.S. launch partner for Windows Phone 7, it looks like T-Mobile will actually have the honor. According to a post on Microsoft’s website, the “Windows Phone 7 Worldwide Launch Event” will take place next Monday, October 11, in New York City. The site also notes that, “T-Mobile reps will be present for device showing and their service offering discussion.” With the launch of the G2 and the relaunch of the myTouch 3G, it looks like the nation’s #4 carrier is coming out swinging for the holidays. There you have it. October 11, New York City, Windows Phone 7. We’re hoping to see that giant, sexy slab of a device known as the HD7. How about you? More →

Microsoft and AT&T to unveil Windows Phone 7 handsets October 11?

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that, “Microsoft Corp. will unveil a lineup of smartphones using the revamped version of its mobile operating system on Oct. 11,” and that AT&T will begin selling said devices in early November. Microsoft does have an event planned for October 11 — Columbus Day — in New York City (which we will be at), but we’re not sure any significant announcements will be made at the open-house style event. Perhaps there is another, mysterious event planned for that day? We’ll try to dig up some more information and report back. More →

Windows Phone 7 launching on October 11?

Pocket-lint is reporting that “multiple sources familiar with the matter” have informed them that Microsoft plans to officially announce its new mobile operating system — Windows Phone 7 — on October 11th. The site writes that the announcement will be made at an event in New York City and the device will be given an official release date, at said event, for later in the month. The October 11 date does line up with the company line Microsoft has been feeding us for months: “in time for the holiday season.” More on this as it becomes available. More →
