Apple looks to Samsung as LG fails to meet iPad 2 display demands, report claims

Tablets

Apple will turn to Samsung and Chimei Innolux to supply display panels for its iPad 2 after LG’s panels failed to meet Apple’s quality requirements. The quality issues with LG’s displays forced the company to miss its July monthly shipment goal by 1 million units, DigiTimes said. Reportedly, LG’s LCD backlight units failed during Apple’s drop tests. LG had hoped to ship 4 million LCD units per month during the third quarter, but only shipped an estimated 2.5-2.6 million units in July. Samsung, by comparison, provided the Cupertino-based firm with two million displays, or twice its monthly average. Chimei Innolux shipped 450,000 units during the month and the company has a new monthly shipment goal of 1 million – 1.5 million units. Despite quality issues, LG is expected to remain the top supplier of LCD displays, and rumor has it the Korea-based company is also working on new Retina screens for the next-generation iPad.

This is like an abusive marriage.  Apple assaults Samsung but still expects Sammy to have dinner on the table at 6pm.

You’re thinking of a business as a singular person, which is rarely true (save for Apple which is, for all intents and purposes, Steve Jobs). Companies like Samsung are massive conglomerates with numerous separate businesses.

SNORE….  Thanks for stating the obvious.  Your 2 cents are overpriced.  I want my 10 seconds back.

If I were Samsung, I wouldn’t provide anything for them.  Apple sues everyone that competes with them.  Now if they could somehow get a decent deal out of it and Apple can make some sort of an agreement with Samsung as a partnership and even drop the lawsuits.  It’ll be peace time in the world of Gadgets once more.  well, maybe for a while anyway, until Microsoft sues the next batch of people next.

Samsung will deliver the iPad screens then Apple will sue them because those screens look like iPad screens.

  • Joe112

Wow.! Isn’t this a kick in the balls. Apple sues their asses and Apple cant make their own lcd displays and they still ask Samsung to do it for them.? This is crazy.!

    • Anonymous

Yeah, because they’re asking Samsung to donate the screens, and aren’t offering to pay a boatload of money that Samsung could use.

Think about it… if other LCD manufacturers can not meet apples demands that means apple can only make a certain amount of tablets… that means if there is no ipad stock cusomers will buy galaxy tabs. So in the long run it will be a win for samsung.

Hey Samsung break it off in their ass

Drop tests?! Now, that’s funny! I’m pretty sure the iPhone 4 failed each and every one of their drop tests.

Do you own an iPhone 4? Mine has been dropped numerous times on anything from concrete to asphalt. A few scuffs, nothing more. And that’s without a case.

So after they sue the living crap out of Samsung in every country known to man, they look towards them for help with the iPad 2 shipments? Wow. I hope Samsung says no, leaving Apple to go cry back to LG.

  • QNX Please

Guess you shouldn’t have sued your best supplier then huh Apple. Samsung should give Steve Jobs the one finger salute and let them live with their poor decision making.

Because Samsung would gladly refuse a large amount of revenue.

Samsung is a huge conglomerate, and its component businesses are not merged with its consumer electronic business.

      • Booboolala2000

But it does give Samsung the upper hand when it comes to price negotiations. Actually the fact that lg can’t deliver already gives them the upper hand.

Goes to show how dumb you people are on this site. Those of you that are saying samsung should tell apple to f off. Last year Apple paid samsung 6-7 billion dollars for parts. Now if your samsung are you going to tell apple to f-off? Didn’t thing so.

    • Booboolala2000

No, you charge them more. To make up for lost revenues

    • Shanghai Dan

Yep – and Apple is trying to squash $6-$7 billion in sales of Samsung tablets…

See, there’s a problem when you don’t actually MAKE anything, and try to control those who do.  Apple is a product concept-and-marketing firm, Samsung actually conceives, designs, and builds product.  Guess which one is left standing when the song stops?

      • Anonymous

Sammy is lucky if they get sales in the $600,000 range. Not sure where you’re getting $6 billion. Second there are thousands of companies that don’t make anything and have been around long before Sammy and apple.

      • Shanghai Dan

$600,000 – really?  Someone’s been smoking the Apple flavored crack…

        800,000 units a month, 12 months, $600 a unit – that’s $6 billion.

      • Anonymous

800,000 a month. We’re still talking about galaxy tabs right?

  • Anonymous

this really takes chutzpah, to task the one your suing the pants off of to meet your production quotas?  I hope Sammy gives them the finger.

I paid $22.85 for an iPhone 4-32GB and my girlfriend loves her Panasonic Lumix GF 1 Camera that we got for $38.76 there arriving tomorrow by UPS. I will never pay such expensive retail prices in stores again. Especially when I also sold a 40 inch LED TV to my boss for $674 which only cost me $62.81 to buy. Here is the website we use to get it all from, CentHub.com

  • Booboolala2000

Good luck with that one apple.

How awkward are the board room meetings on this one?

Samsung doesn’t care fandroids opinions, Samsung still need Apple money.

Maybe the new Sammy panels for iPad will blow up remotely like Apple batteries.

So whenever someone is writing a comment on his/her iPad saying how cool
it is, it i’ll turn into a flame ball+kaboom+shards of glass and
carcinogenic liquid metals to his/her face thus improving the 3D experience of iOS and Samsung display technology.
