Microsoft Windows Phone 'Mango' details emerge, available this fall

mobile

AllThingsD had a chance to sit down with Microsoft VP Joe Belfiore to discuss the new Windows Phone 7 “Mango” update, which the Redmond-based firm is discussing during the MIX 11 conference in Las Vegas today. Belfiore confirmed that Mango will offer a new browsing experience using Internet Explorer 9, and noted that it will have integrated Twitter features. Similarly, Mango will allow users to run multiple programs at the same time – complete with background audio support. That means you could theoretically stream music from Slacker Radio while firing off an email. Microsoft will also allow developers to tap into a phone’s gyroscope and camera, which it hopes will help spur more augmented reality applications. Speaking of apps, Belfiore confirmed that Layar, Skype, Spotify, and Angry Birds, are on their way to the Windows Marketplace. Belfiore confirmed that Mango will launch this fall.

There is some good stuff in Mango. They are really polishing off the OS and I can’t wait for the update. I’m still a little hesitant at recommending WP7 to some people but once Mango is out that will be a problem of the past. I was pysced to see pivots in the Marketplace search and new additions to Bing.

The problem is the competition isn’t static. Android and iOS are moving forward too.

Of course they are but Microsoft will too.

It may be “released” this fall, but wont hit phones till January 2012, Microsoft is quoted in saying the delay s yet again the carriers and their evil demans to TEST TEST TEST TEST..

Taking bets now that is what we’ll hear around xmas!

Clearly no one wants to a place bet because you are obviously talking out of your ass.

Do you have any idea how software development cycle works? There are multiple phases and each one is important before it is released to millions of different phones around the world, on different carriers with different configurations. There’s development, test, quality assurance (carrier based testing) and finally, production.

If any one of those carriers enables this update to just go out to their phones without internally testing, they will get a lot of heat from the consumers, which in turn will look bad on Microsoft, too. No body wants to screw over their partners in business so they have a contract to test the software before releasing to consumers.

The Samsung Focus fiasco was a great example of how bad things can get. I’m glad that happened earlier when the user base was small because it gave Microsoft data to improve the update system and refine it. This is how RIM, Android and Apple all learned – from mistakes.

Windows Phone 7 just keeps getting better. Kudos to Microsoft.

Yep, after this update in another 6 months, it will have almost caught up to where Android and iOS were 2 years ago

u acting like windows just came in the smartphone game. Did u forget about windows mobile?

      • http://twitter.com/tarund TarunD

Your argument about Windows Mobile is flawed for one reason, and the only reason – Windows Phone 7 is a brand new OS and it did lack those features when it first arrived but Microsoft is doing a great job of providing very fast updates. That is amazing, amazing stuff!

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have to shush steve75 and take him to school.

      • http://twitter.com/tarund TarunD

You do realize that Microsoft’s development cycle for WP7 updates has been much quicker then Apple and Android. It’s not like Microsoft is just sitting around and not listening to its consumers (Apple).

Did Apple invite the jailbreakers to their offices to discuss how to make iOS more open? No, and they will never do it.

Microsoft is being very transparent about what they’re doing to bring the features customers want. It’s taking the feedback seriously and taking actions.

Arrogant people like yourself don’t see that at all. You just see the past and now. You’re not looking at the big picture, which Microsoft clearly knows how it will turn out because they have all the pieces of the puzzle for WP7.

How about some new phones. Nothing new since 2010. Where’s the new hardware MS!? Your 1st round of devices is getting VERY old, and weren’t all that great from the start. Do we really have to wait until 2012 and Nokia. Are the “flagship” AT&T phones ever going to get the 1st update? Big fail so far…

Mango in the fall will bring Galaxy 2 specs to Windows Phone.

You could always just bypass the OTA and get the update. How many phones have Gingerbread for Android?? My Samsung Focus is fast enough and other than video chat it isn’t missing anything worth paying for a new phone.

nice! windows phone wikl be catching up to 2006 technology!

I love how this post leaves out any real detail about what was announced at Mix, just another sloppy BGR article. How about following it up with another analyst story with nothing more that conjecture? We like those too.

“That means you could theoretically stream music from Slacker Radio while firing off an email” so you can’t do that now! Useless! WTF… they going to be 24months behind everyone, with 13k apps.

  • Bobudo

Oh man, mutlitasking!!! hell yeah Microsoft, way to look to the future!!!!

Oh wait, I mean the 2010 party. When all of your competitors implemented these features. I mean, the only thing keeping me from buying a WP7 phone was the lack of BACKGROUND AUDIO SUPPORT ARE YOU KIDDING?

Way to be the fat kid in gym class who doesn’t even bother to get off the bench Microsoft.

    • Bullyboyb

Lol, I have never seen such stupidity in my whole life. Maybe I just hang around intelligent people.
      You are so wrong.

      • OBJ_me

How so? Why criticize if you aren’t going to back it with facts and elaborate?

hmm…interesting choice of name- a good Mango is better tasting and healthier than any dessert and sure beats the hell out of eating an apple.
Only thing though- Mango season runs till July. I am sure the thousands of Indians on the Redmond campus are well aware of that.
