TiVo Premiere is now free on $20 monthly contract

Entertainment

You heard that correctly, folks. TiVo has begun plans to subsidize their DVR hardware with a monthly fee. The Premiere is available for free with a 2 year commitment and $20 monthly fee, but is also available for $99 which requires only a year-long arrangement. The TiVo Premiere XL rings up at $299 with a one year commitment if you just can’t pass up some THX-certified recorded shows. TiVo had been experimenting with these plans on and off for the last week, but as of now, they are available to everyone directly from TiVo’s website.

TiVo has changed their service plan terms and conditions. TiVo’s new offer is to market the TCD746320 for $99.99, but now require people who purchase it at that price-point to only be able to subscribe to service for $20/mo (compared to $12/mo before) and they are not eligible for a Lifetime plan.

As a result, you’re going to see a lot of retailers have the TiVo TCD746320 for $99, but will NOT be a hot deal.

For those who purchased the TiVo TCD746320 before Nov 14, congratulations, you are still eligible for the cheaper monthly plan and/or the lifetime plan.

I’d rather pay more upfront than more monthly.

    Here’s my fine-print question:

The least expensive of the new plans is the $99.99 box fee + one year commitment at $20/month. Total cost = $340.

But . . . . does that lock you in to paying $20/month in perpetuity should you want to continue service after the contract period? Can you switch to a pre-paid plan for months 13 and beyond?

TIVO is pricing themselves out of the market. TIVO used to be so affordable 8 years ago. I bet if they had the prices of 8 years ago Dish Network would not have a problem using their technology for their services.

or you could just hook up your PC and use Windows Media Center…awesomeness and I didn’t even have to buy a retarded google tv.

TiVo needs to do something to compete against cable company DVRs. I have a Premiere and love all the features I get over the DVR that Verizon provides.

TiVo needs more deals like they have with RCN, where the Premiere IS the DVR for the cable company. Slap in a Cablecard and you’re good to go.
