Microsoft's April 12th event will unveil "Pure" and "Turtle" handsets

mobile

microsoft-pure-turtle-leakYesterday, after we wrote about the April 12th Microsoft event, both CNET and the Wall Street Journal published articles claiming to have sources with knowledge of just what Microsoft has planned. “The event will herald the introduction of Microsoft’s long-awaited new phones for the always-connected crowd. The devices, code-named Pure and Turtle… will run on Verizon Wireless’ network and go on sale within the month following the event,” wrote CNET. Both the Pure and the Turtle are rumored to be touch-screen, full-QWERTY slider phones, and developed under the project code name “Pink.” The two new handsets are also said to run a version of Windows CE, although it is unclear whether they will be able to leverage applications that currently run on Windows Mobile, or applications designed for the upcoming Windows Phone 7, or neither. Just six days left. We’ll be tuned in… how about you?

Wow. Hope it does well. I just want a lower data plan cost.

  • Steel

No. No, I won’t be tuned in. I thought this was a Courier announcement. Maybe I’m wrong, but I don’t see a red hot void in the market for newer version of the old Sidekick. Everyone else releases 4.3″ screen beasts and VZW comes out with this.
    Nice.

This is aimed at tweeners, Thus the social networking. Im sure I saw an article about that. its kind of like motoblur.

      • bizguy

I’m envisioning a new section on BGR made especially for teens and tweens. Each web page in this section will be brightly-colored (maybe even neon). There will be loud embedded music, huge annoying flash ads for XBOX games and . . . news about Microsoft projects Pure and Turtle.

      • StevenGlansburg

I don’t buy that geared toward tweeners crap anymore. Iphone, Android phones and the like all aim at teens and adults. No one wants a completely dumbed down OS that can’t get the apps that Apple and Android advertise.

      • Channan

So true. I already get notifications on my phone when something new happens on Facebook, and I can already visit the full Facebook site. There’s so many great Twitter apps for those that actually use Twitter. No one uses MySpace any more, but again you have the full site on your phone. Why do you need a whole phone dedicated to those things?

      • Celz

All they have to do is make some sidekickish commercials with Paris Hilton and Snoop Dog being cool and they phones will be huge hits.. Period.. The average person thinks the exact opposite of how they average tech blogger thinks.. Look at how many people paid computer prices for an iPad this weekend…

      • cold dead fingers

The iPad is a different matter entirely. The iPad can be can be a computer replacement. I mean, for shits sake, the AVERAGE user only mostly uses their computer for simple things like email and general web browsing. To have that in a 1.5 pound package and a 12+ hour battery has nothing to do with the a specific group of people.

      • iName

if thats all it is, they shouldnt have made some huge event then.

    • Elway7

Most Phones sold in the u.s. are mid range feature phones, teens are a big part of that market, they will sell quite a few of these, maybe not to most of us on bgr, but to the younger masses. My son doesnt need an Aston Martin with paddle shifters.

    • skyy_flyer

Wow this headline is misleading. I was thinking that MICROSOFT was making this phone but Verizon is who’s coming out with this? Just can’t trust inside information anymore can you? Face it, just because WE don’t like the phone, doesn’t mean NOBODY will like the phone.

    > We’ll be tuned in…how about you?

Nah, MS is too late to the mobile party, with too crumby a track record. Apple and Google have rendered them irrelevant.

    • Paul

Teens using G1s and iPhones, yea right.

    • ChocoTaco

Yes, Microsoft is clearly an irrelevant company and not a major player. Do people think before they post? Three years ago, AMD was kicking Intel’s ass. How did that one play out?

  • Elway7

    NO, Not another moto karma.

  • McD’s fry cook

Im gonna get drunk and tune in, this sounds like its gonna be pretty funny.

  • Christopher Cox

Woohoo! Woohoo! Wooohoooooooo! *jerk off motion*

    • McD’s fry cook

Come on now what kind of example are you setting for clippy clippy clip clop and the honey suckle twins. Before you type give it a ponder!

  • RK

Turtle? Is this supposed to be so uncool a name that it is cool? And Windows CE for 2010? April 1st was last week.

    • crappypunk

      you’re pretty

  • rusty

I put this up there with Baskin Robins announcement of thier new flavor of the month.

    • crappypunk

:O i missed it this month what is it? soooo excited

  • (The real Jarrett) Jarrett

COOL! I for one am excited. This product is for those 8-12 year olds whose parents are to buy not being parents. You know the kids, they have cell phones, their own MySpace and Facebook accounts. They should actually sell quite a few of these phones.

Make the world a better place
Punch these parents in the face.

    • StevenGlansburg

Why have you all down-ranked Jarrett? He is right. Parents, largely are declining in quality. The fact that this shit is geared towards kids that are in the ages which they are developing behavioral patterns and learning how to interact in a socially acceptable manner is sick.

      • (The real Jarrett) Jarrett

        Well said sir, well said.

  • Que???

“We’ll be tuned in…how about you?”

For Courier news…yes. Mid Range, text messaging, myspacing, tweenage handset…no.

  • saltorio

I’m done with MS and their attempts into the mobile market. Couldn’t care less.

    • !

      So you do care?

      • TIG

Saltorio got it right, ! you failed.

  • Scott

I don’t think I’ll be paying much attention to this on the 12th!

Posted from BGR Mobile (iPhone) at: Salt Lake City Utah, USA

  • Tay

Those phones are ugly and look cheap. Not so big of an announcement really. Not looking forward to the 12th and it’s a Monday so screw it

    • TIG

I’m a huge MS fan but you are right. These are super ugly.

  • Geoff

Anyone know if we will need the $29.99 data plan for these phones or can we get the $9.99 one

  • http://www.innopath.com Jason Lackey

Wonder if these will effectively finish off Palm? From what I am seeing on VZW the Palms are being sold at a price that would make them compelling texting teen devices, I mean how can you beat $50 BOGO (at least until the keyboard falls off)?

  • Uncle Bernie

who would be stupid enough to buy this?

  • iName

who the hell makes an event for a mid-range cell phone? what a waste of time and money.

if lg threw a keynote for every stupid handset they made for VZW, there would be one every two weeks!

  • loki

I bet they will drop more money on this event vs. the money they will make from the devices.

The only cool tutles I know of are the TMNT.

When I read TURTLE, the first thing I thought of was “SLOW”, followed by “SHELL”

I’m sure a lot of people will think the latter and associate it with a shell form, but, the inner nerd in me is already turned off. Then again, it’s not marketed towards me…

  • Fattychance

Wake me up if they do something interesting….I’m not holding my breath.

  • Mintpass

Too little, too late. That said, what we need and want from failing company is Courier. Without rival product against iPad, Microsoft will face similar situation as the Palm. Mark my word.

  • Patrick

Maybe interesting a year and a half ago. Not now. Really. No news on courier. Looks like I’ll be getting the HP slate. Better get with it Microsoft. And you better throw down a winmo 7 phone sooner than this fall, because that will be outdated soon too. I think I will stick with android

  • drh

You got to be kidding me, this really is Microsoft’s big announcement ??

    Well words fail me….

Anyone else think its time Gates comes back to resurrect the MS train crash that is Steve Ballmer.

How the mighty are falling fast.

  • ben

I am embarrassed to say it, but I am slightly interested in what this will be (if only to see the rumor come full circle). Plus, I have a soft spot for odd messaging/feature phones.
