The Xbox One and PlayStation 4 have been incredibly successful up to this point, but there’s no question that the new consoles would have benefitted greatly from a little more time in development before launch. By lacking a few key features, both consoles felt unfinished, but Microsoft has been hard at work getting the Xbox One up to speed. The latest update might be the most significant one yet.

As we noted earlier this month, the September update for the Xbox One is bringing a media player to the console. The Media Player app will let you play a wide variety of files from a USB device, even more than the Xbox 360 supported.

The Party app has also received an upgrade, allowing one member to become the party leader. The party leader can decide if the party is open or closed and can kick other members out of the party. You can also see what everyone else in your party is doing at any given time and mute them if they won’t stop bragging about how they killed that zombie.

SmartGlass has been revamped as well. You can post status updates to your Activity Feed and comment on your friends’ statuses too. You’ll also have your own personalized Activity Feed, full conversation view for messages and the ability to record game clips straight from the Now Playing bar.

For international Xbox One owners, the “Xbox On” voice command will finally be supported in Australia, Canada, Italy, Spain and Mexico. OneGuide is also coming to Brazil, Mexico, Austria and Ireland.

Watch the video below for more on the new Xbox One features in the September update.
