The money will be available in the form of grants to public and private organizations that are willing to work on developing technology specifically designed to be of use during times of disaster and calamity. Applications will include more reliable and stable telecommunications services that will be able to remain online during natural/unnatural disasters, more robust radio emergency radio transmission systems, and disaster specific satellite communications systems. The funding for this program is expected to come from the government’s upcoming auction of usage rights for the 700MHz wireless spectrum. Nice efficiency there, guys. But in all seriousness, we’re up for anything that might help in a crisis.
