Have you been searching for 839 teraflops worth of computing power? Coming up short? Languish no longer, as NEC might have just the ticket. The Japanese company announced the SX-9. It is more or less a supercomputer to end all supercomputers and is designed to be used in advanced scientific applications. It’s also able to calculate 839 teraflops of per second. Yikes! 99.9% of this power would be lost on the average consumer, so it’s no wonder that NEC has decided to ship these directly to research labs and other high-stress applications. There’s no word from them on exactly how much the SX-9 will cost, but we’re guessing that it ain’t OLPC cheap.
