Legere makes a bold prediction about T-Mobile’s future

May 2nd, 2014 at 11:30 PM
T-Mobile CEO Legere Interview

It’s safe to say that T-Mobile CEO is feeling pretty cocky after his carrier reported adding 2.4 million net new customers last quarter alone. In an interview with Yahoo Tech, Legere predicts that T-Mobile’s momentum will only grow over the next year and he thinks that the “Uncarrier” will have 75 million subscribers by this time next year.

To get a sense of just how big this would be, consider that at the end of last quarter, T-Mobile had 49 million total subscribers. This means that to reach 75 million subscribers by this time next year, T-Mobile will have to add a whopping 6.5 million subscribers per quarter, or more than two-and-a-half times the number of subscribers that T-Mobile reported this past quarter.

So it seems that Legere’s prediction of hitting 75 million subscribers a year from now seems unlikely to come true. On the other hand, T-Mobile is certainly on pace to overtake Sprint as America’s No. 3 wireless carrier over the next year, which in and of itself is pretty remarkable given that T-Mobile has long languished well behind as America’s No. 4 wireless carrier.

UPDATE: T-Mobile checks in to say that, although it’s not clear from the interview at Yahoo Tech, Legere was making a joke about reaching 75 million subscribers next year.
