Many reports have detailed Microsoft’s plans to release a smaller Surface mini Windows tablet that would compete directly against the iPad mini and similarly sized Android tablets, but the company has taken its time to actually bring the product to market. However, Microsoft may soon launch the Surface mini, as it has scheduled a “small” press event for May 20 in New York City, where it’s supposed to talk about its Surface tablet line, according to The Next Web.
Microsoft has not confirmed yet whether the event is about the smaller Surface, but the press event’s message – “Join us for a small gathering” – seems to suggest the Surface mini will be the star of the show.
The device is expected to have a 7-inch or 8-inch touchscreen display and run Windows RT, although the full set of specs is not available yet.
While it’s not clear when the Surface mini would actually be launched, a recent report claimed the tablet will hit stores this spring. Furthermore, Amazon has also inadvertently confirmed the device, as a retailer listed several accessories that would fit a smaller Surface mini tablet which would be in stock starting with May 18.
