The writing may have been on the wall here for quite a while, but it’s still a bit shocking to hear it from the horse’s mouth, no? James Gosling, VP at Sun Microystems, has revealed that the company is now actively trying to distance itself from the mobile-specific Java ME protocol. “We’re trying to converge everything to the Java SE specification. Cell phones and TV set-top boxes are growing up.” Sounds like a death blow to us. Could this have anything to do with a certain..ahem…iPhone? It’s important to note that while the company is scrapping mobile Java right now, they expect to continue to support the software well into the next decade. That said, they will clearly be encouraging developers to work with them on the new full-scale product, so look for increased full Java SE support in the near future.
Sun to say goodbye to Java Mobile
