You may think that dedicated digital music players are on their way out and that the Sony Walkman died a long time ago. Sony thinks you’re wrong on both counts because it’s just unveiled a new digital music player at CES 2015 called the Walkman ZX2 that’s tailored to people who value high-resolution audio.
FROM EARLIER: CES is just starting, and here are the wildest gadgets announced so far
Sony says the new Walkman “supports digital music files up to 192 kHz/24 bit and compatible file formats are MP3, WMA, AAC, FLAC, AIFF, WAV and ALAC including DSD.” This means you should be able to listen to lossless sound files that don’t have the compressed sound quality of many standard MP3s.
Even better, the device comes with 128GB of storage, a micro SD card slot, and a powerful Lithium-ion battery that offers up to 60 hours of playback on one charge. In other words, if you’ve ever wanted to listen to Wagner’s entire Ring opera cycle in one sitting, it sounds like this is the audio player for you.
There is a downside here, though: The price. Sony will charge $1,119.99 for the Walkman ZX2, which is a significant premium that we can only imagine truly dedicated audiophiles paying.
The device is set to release this coming spring. To get more information about it, check out Sony’s full announcement available at the source link below.
