Investors sent Nokia shares sliding on Thursday after the vendor posted less-than-stellar results for the second quarter this year. Nokia narrowed its loss substantially in the second quarter to -$151 million, but handset sales plummeted 27% to 61.1 million units and average selling prices fell off a cliff. But amid all the gloom, Nokia’s global Lumia shipments climbed to a record 7.4 million units on the back of the Lumia 520, and an important milestone was achieved: Lumia shipments in the second quarter outnumbered BlackBerry smartphone shipments in BlackBerry’s most recent fiscal quarter, which totaled just 6.8 million units. The bloody battle for No.3 is far from over but as bad as things have been for Nokia, they’re looking even worse for BlackBerry right now.
