Stephen Elop isn’t out of the running for Microsoft CEO just yet. Unnamed sources tell Reuters that Microsoft has cut its shortlist of potential CEOs down to just five external candidates and that former Nokia CEO Stephen Elop and Ford CEO Alan Mulally have made the cut. In addition to its five external CEO candidates, Microsoft is considering at least three internal candidates including former Skype CEO Tony Bates. Reuters’s sources say that even though Microsoft has significantly narrowed the scope of its CEO search down from a bigger list of 40 candidates, the process of choosing a new chief executive could still take months.
