Yes, iPhone 6s lines are starting to form around the world in the markets where the smartphone will be available for purchase on Friday. And yes, there’s a robot that’s currently waiting in one of those lines to by an iPhone 6s.
Well, technically, it’s still controlled by a human, but we shouldn’t be surprised to see similar stories pop up in the years to come.
The Lucy robot – which belongs to Sydney, Australia native Lucy Kelly – arrived at 5 a.m. on Thursday to sit in the iPhone 6s line, Mashable reports. The robot is rather a strange contraption: a Segway-like machine that has an iPad on top, as seen images above and below.
“We use them for everything, just to show new technology. It is a cool demonstration of what the future of technology will be,” Kelly told Mashable Australia. “We are obsessed with them.”
The robot is part of a fleet of six similar devices that media agency Atomic 212 sourced and built for its office. According to Kelly, her boss even attended meetings in Sydney while on vacation in Bali using one of the robots.
Australia will be the first country to get the iPhone 6s on Friday, due to time zone differences, and the robot will be among the first people (well… things?) in the world to buy a new iPhone.
Apparently, the robot will buy the iPhone without any human interaction, after spending the night in a special tent that comes with a charger meant to keep it protected from the rain and charged up for tomorrows rain.
“I am staying here the whole time,” Kelly said, as she’ll be the robot’s voice and face.
“I wanted to be one of the first people to have the iPhone 6S, but obviously because of work I can’t spend two days standing in line waiting for a mobile phone,” she added. “So my boss said ‘Just take the robot down, you’ll still be able to do your work, but you’ll still be waiting in line.'”
