Once relegated to the bedroom lives of teenage girls everywhere, Instant Messaging has quickly become a enterprise-worthy method of communication. De-centralization coupled with increased mobility and the need to be constantly “in touch” has brought instant messaging to the forefront of the corporate world. Supporting that claim is a recent Garnter study, predicting that IM will account for 95% of all corporate communication by the year 2011. Garnter predicts that in 5 years almost all major corporations will rely on some type of IM protocol for their voice, video, and text communication. The question now is which protocol will triumph? AIM has been the dominant party from day one, but recent challenges from the likes of Google and Yahoo, not to mention the ubiquitous (if annoying) presence of MSN Messenger, continues to make this a free for all.
