Tensions between Huawei, China and various Western governments are heating up. Earlier this week, the United States government revealed that the rapid expansion of the Chinese telecom equipment maker could pose as a potential threat to national security and urged American companies to stop doing business with Huawei. It is widely believed that the company has close ties to the Chinese government, although Huawei has denied these claims. Canada is planning to build a government network for phones calls, emails and data services, like the U.S., the country may also exclude the Chinese telecom equipment giant. A spokesperson for Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper say that “the government’s going to be choosing carefully in the construction of this network, and it has invoked the national security exception for the building of this network.”
