Peter Chou, Chief Executive Officer at HTC, is causing quite a stir with a few off-the-cuff comments he made during an interview at CTIA on Wednesday. When talking about the Nexus One, Chou declared the device a success and claimed it will drive new business to HTC, despite the handset’s shaky public reception. For those that have been living in a closet, the Nexus One has had a somewhat rocky beginning with early customers reporting 3G reception issues, lagging sales that obviously placed it behind the DROID in popularity, and most recently, display issues that mar the handsets self-proclaimed status as a super-phone. Chou brushed aside the lagging sales and claimed that “the Nexus One is doing pretty well”, when you consider that Google did not “do [standard] retail or marketing for it”. Chou failed to address any shortcomings of the device, choosing to focus on the innovative design of the Nexus One and the experience HTC gained in developing the Android 2.1 device. Chou brought it all home by declaring , “We can quickly leverage that credit [the Nexus One] to show that we are the top Android brand”. So what do you think, did Peter Chou partake of that fast Vegas lifestyle before taking the stage at CTIA or is he spot on with his assessment of the Nexus One and what it means for HTC?
