Rumors of a less expensive iPhone in development at Apple (AAPL) persist as new purported details surrounding the upcoming handset emerge. Citing multiple unnamed sources within Apple’s supply chain, Digitimes on Tuesday reports that Apple’s new entry-level handset will use a completely redesigned chassis. Rather than glass or metal, the report claims Apple’s new iPhone may utilize less expensive plastic chassis that could be supplied by a U.S.-based company. Digitimes also notes that “rumors are circulating” suggesting the new iPhone’s case will use a mix of metal and see-through plastic that would make some internal metal parts visible on the outside of the phone. The new cheaper iPhone is expected to launch some time in the second half of 2013.
