Last week we discussed AT&T’s smartphone strategy in a world where the nation’s No. 2 carrier can no longer rely on the iPhone to carry its smartphone business alone. Long story short, AT&T will finally begin to take Android seriously this year, beginning with the Motorola ATRIX 4G, the HTC Inspire 4G and the Samsung Infuse 4G. In an alleged internal document published by Android enthusiast blog phandroid, AT&T mentions that it will launch no 12 new Android devices this year. That works out to an average of one new Android device each month, of course, and at those odds it’s a safe bet we’ll see a few gems surface over the course of 2011. Gems as in awesome Android phones and tablets — not the Samsung Gem, that is. The document also reaffirms AT&T’s intention to launch 20 4G devices this year, as the carrier stated during this year’s Consumer Electronics Show.
