If AT&T (T) has its way, no text message will ever again be lost in translation. Technology Review reports that the carrier is testing out new technology capable of translating texts sent in English into Spanish, and vice-versa, to make communicating across language barriers significantly easier. What’s particularly interesting about the technology is that it requires no action on end users’ part: The software can detect the default language of the device a text message is being sent to and can translate it automatically. Mazin Gilbert, AT&T Labs’ vice president for intelligent systems research, says that the company is working on adding six additional languages to the technology as well, and it is even toying with the idea of real-time voice translation.
