Anbernic has had a busy year so far, releasing a variety of retro gaming handhelds in just about every configuration imaginable. First, we got the RG35XX H, which flipped the vertical RG35XX on its side for a sleek horizontal control setup. Next came the powerful Anbernic RG556 with an AMOLED display, the minuscule RG28XX, and a GBA SP clone dubbed the RG35XXSP. All of those devices launched in the first half of 2024, but Anbernic isn’t done yet.
This Friday, Anbernic finally announced the RG Cube, which has a relatively unique form factor. Similar to the Powkiddy RGB30, the RG Cube has a 1:1 square display, which is great for retro consoles like the NES, SNES, and Game Boy, as well as the PICO-8 game engine.
But unlike the RGB30, which comes with the RK3566 chip, the RG Cube is equipped with the same powerful Unisoc T820 processor that powers the RG556. Therefore, the RG Cube should be able to run any Nintendo 64 and Dreamcast era games without issue, as well as select titles for the Nintendo 3DS, PlayStation 2, GameCube, and even the Wii.
Beyond the chip, the RG Cube also features a 3.95-inch IPS touchscreen display, quad-core Mali-G57 GPU, 8GB of LPDRR4X RAM, 128GB of internal storage (expandable via microSD), 5200mAh battery, Hall Effect joysticks with RGB lighting effects, USB Type-C port, 3.5mm jack for headphones, dual speakers, and Android 13.
The retro handheld will be available in three colors at launch: Beige White, Radiant Purple, and Gray. Anbernic has yet to announce pricing or the release date for the RG Cube, but given how quickly the company pumps out these devices, we’ll probably know soon.
