It’s Back to the Future week on the Internet, as we’ve finally reached the moment in 2015 when Doc Brown and Marty McFly traveled 30 years into the future from 1985 in the film Back to the Future Part II. While the world today looks very different compared to the one we saw in that film all those decades ago, it seems that Nike has done its best to make one piece of technology in the movie come to life: Namely, the self-lacing shoes.

Back to the Future star Michael J. Fox went on Jimmy Kimmel this week to show off the new Nike Mags, the company’s first self-lacing sneakers that will be available in 2016. Like the shoes in the movies, you can slip the Mags on your feet and then they’ll tighten up around your feet when you press a button on the side. The new sneakers will be sold at an auction that will benefit the Michael J. Fox Foundation that funds research for Parkinson’s disease treatments.

We started creating something for fiction and we turned it into fact, inventing a new technology that will benefit all athletes,” Nike CEO Mark Parker says of the new shoes. “By imagining the future, we create it. Product that comes alive, with on-demand comfort and support when you need, product that senses you and adapts to you is right around the corner.”
