A job opening on Google’s website this week might be the first sign that Google Fiber is finally making its way to New York City. Geek.com came across the listing on Tuesday for a Google Fiber Regional Sales Manager for New York, a position in which the chosen individual “will manage multiple teams that evangelize Google Fiber services to MDU (multi-dwelling apartments and condos) and large SMB owners.”
Google Fiber has already been a roaring success in its initial launch markets, but Google has avoided the staunch competition of large metropolitan regions thus far. Although New York did not make it on the most recent list of cities that would be receiving Google Fiber, this job opening seems to signal that Time Warner and Verizon FiOS will have some competition in the near future.
Considering how slow the rollout of Verizon’s own fiber optic network has been, Google wouldn’t have much trouble stealing the mobile phone company’s thunder with even moderately more extensive coverage. As for Time Warner, millions of customers would drop their subscriptions in a heartbeat for faster speeds and better service. The logistics of introducing Google Fiber in NYC are undoubtedly complicated, but you’ll be hard-pressed to find a market more willing to give another company a chance.
UPDATE: Speaking with Ars Technica, a Google spokesperson says that the company doesn’t currently have any plans to bring Google Fiber to New York. Members of the Google Fiber team have been operating out of the New York office for years.
