Yes, there are a few different options when it comes to streaming satellite radio to various platforms. uSirius and uXM for example, are capable of acting as a server and creating MMS-streams out of each individual satellite radio station. A software media player can then play the created stream just as it would with an internet radio station. When combined with Orb’s MyCast service, certain mobile devices such as the iPhone can play the MMS-streams as well. Needless to say, existing solutions are often inconvenient and cumbersome. What if there was one solution that provided a convenient way to stream Sirius and XM to a whole host of platforms simply and efficiently? What if said solution was available without the need to leave your PC on in order to run a local server application? That is exactly what this forthcoming service claims it will do. The StreamSmart project was started back in January by GeeksToolbox and the finished solution will replace three of the developer’s current projects: SiriusWM5, iSat and SiriusGTX. When all is said and done, StreamSmart will be available as a free web-based solution streaming in Windows Media format. Owners of any device / application capable of playing Windows Media streams will be able to enjoy the web-based service for free. There will also be a pay service that transcodes the streams into various other formats to accommodate devices such as BlackBerry handsets and the iPhone / iPod Touch. Now before the cheapos start whining, there will be an option to install the StreamSmart solution with transcoding capabilities locally. In that event, you won’t have to pay a dime but your PC will have to remain on as with the aforementioned solutions.
