YouTube HD in the works?

We’ll be the first to admit that this sounds a bit far fetched, especially given the constraints of the average consumer Internet connection. That said, we would certainly welcome the addition of HD content to YouTube’s online video library. The company recently hinted at plans to bring an HD version of YouTube to the online market some time in the future. The problem, of course, is that file size constraints could turn HD content into an exercise in futility. YouTube would have to work on some pretty revolutionary compression engineering to ensure that viewers didn’t simply give up on trying to access the new videos. The biggest virtue of YouTube’s current offering is the level of instant gratification available with their vast catalog. Would HD ruin the appeal?
