Images published earlier this week that allegedly showed an unannounced Nokia (NOK) smartphone have reportedly been confirmed to be authentic, revealing what one blogger claims will be Nokia’s first Windows Phone 8 device. As it turns out, the company’s first Windows Phone 8 smartphone will look exactly like its first Windows Phone 7 smartphone, which also happens to look exactly like its first Windows Phone 7.5 smartphone. We’re starting to notice a trend.
The Nokia Innovation blog states that the Nokia Lumia phone pictured above, purportedly code-named “Nokia Phi,” will be the successor to the Lumia 800. The leaked images of the device make it look much closer in size to the Nokia Lumia 900, however, and the site suggests it might have the same 4.3-inch display as the 900.
For what it’s worth, a Nokia executive confirmed to me during CES 2012 that Nokia was working on a smartphone at that time with the exact same footprint as the Lumia 900, but with a larger 4.5-inch display. My guess: This is it.
Other specs put forth by Nokia Innovation include a dual-core Qualcomm chipset (the first dual-core processor to hit a Lumia phone), expandable memory, integrated NFC and 4G LTE connectivity.
Nokia’s first Windows Phone 8 handset will launch during the last week of October according to the report, which would leave quite a gap between the rumored September 5th announcement and launch — a gap that would be filled quite amply by Apple’s next-generation iPhone.
