If you’ve been pulled over for speeding and you think you’re innocent, there are ways to fight your speeding ticket that will increase your chances of getting off the hook. Writing over at The Raw Story, former police officer Roy Reyer (a.k.a., “Radar Roy”) offers some essential tips for anyone who wants to challenge their speeding ticket and win.

A big part of beating your speeding ticket involves knowing the kind of radar gun the police used to cite you. Reyer recommends politely asking the officer who pulled you over to show you the gun he used to allegedly catch you speeding. Even if he doesn’t show you the radar gun himself, you can usually see the type of gun listed on your citation or you can make a followup call to the police department afterward asking for that information.
Once you know the make and model of the radar gun used, you’ll want to download and read the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s official guidelines and specifications that officers need to follow when using different kinds of radar guns. Additionally, it will help you to bone up on case law for speeding cases involving radar guns, as there have been plenty of instances in which these guns were shown to have produced inaccurate readings.
