Could the Galaxy S6 edge be an even bigger hit than Samsung imagined?

A new report from South Korean publication ETnews reveals that Samsung is scrambling to increase Galaxy S6 edge production, as the device is a lot more popular with its retail partners than initially believed.

Samsung is looking to triple the initial Galaxy S6 edge production volume after taking into account feedback received from distribution channels, ETnews’ sources say.

It’s not clear what that actually means for Samsung when it comes to actual sales numbers. The Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge are not available in stores yet, so there’s no way of measuring how popular any of the two models is with customers. But the publication reports that mobile operators have demanded more Galaxy S6 edge units from Samsung than they initially ordered.

Samsung so far has confirmed it sold more than 20 million combined Galaxy S6 units to partners and the company is expected to move more than 50 million units in the first year. However, Samsung did not actually reveal how many units of those 20 million were edge models.

Aside from the Galaxy S6 edge’s curved display that offers users some interesting features, the Galaxy S6 edge will be identical to the Galaxy S6 when it comes to hardware. Furthermore, access to a curved display also means users will have to pay slightly more for the edge model. Despite all that, the Galaxy S6 edge might look a lot better to potential buyers than the flat version, making it the more appealing version of the two new flagships.

Apple ran into a similar issue last year following the iPhone 6’s launch when the iPhone 6 Plus was significantly more popular than initially expected in certain markets.
