So check it out… RIM’s huge BlackBerry hullabaloo, Wireless Enterprise Symposium, or “WES”, officially kicks off tomorrow in sunny Orlando, but that didn’t stop the Waterloo folks from busting out two — count ‘em, two — hot new smartphones prior to all of the festivities. Well, well, well. Looks like Verizon might get beaten to the punch when it comes to the release of the highly-anticipated BlackBerry Bold 9650. A leaked screenshot of a Sprint hotsheet has some believing that the device might just land on the Now Network on the 16th of May, a few days ahead of Big Red. Of course with nothing being official there’s no guarantees of anything, but we’re really hoping we’re in for a simultaneous release on both networks just like we did with the Bold’s predecessor, the Tour 9630. It looks like our initial report of a May release for the successor to BlackBerry Tour 9630 is spot on, as an internal website where Bank of America employees can order new handsets shows the device listed as coming to Verizon in May. Not only that, but the site also seems to confirm what we and others have been hearing about it being promoted to a full-fledged member of the Bold family. Whether or not the device will keep the model number 9650 is still in question, but can easily see it being Christened as the 9750 in order to keep RIM’s naming conventions in tact. Of course the fact that it looks nearly identical to the Tour 9630 would be just as confusing to some, but at least it’s better than having two different device names sit within the 96xx line. Anyone else thinking this sucker is a due for an official outing at WES? More →

We have just received word that Verizon will officially release a 5.0 OS upgrade for the BlackBerry Tour 9630 in “late February / early March.” Anyone want to bet the BlackBerry Tour2 will hit before that?
What could be better than the original BlackBerry Tour? Well, the BlackBerry Tour2 obviously. We’ve just got a hold of one and will be putting it through our normal thorough review processes, but in the meantime, here are some first impressions:
- Physical size is nearly, if not identical to the original BlackBerry Tour
- The trackpad works great, just as you’d expect
- We guessed the original Tour was slightly underpowered, and we were right. Fortunately the Tour2 seems to use the processor found in the Storm2, and that’s a welcome improvement. In the short time we’ve been using it, there aren’t many slowdowns that we’d normally get on the Tour, and the device feels much more snappy
- The keyboard remains at greatness status
- Wi-Fi works like any other BlackBerry
All in all a much-needed upgrade to keep Verizon and Sprint’s BlackBerry lineup current, and it might even be the device that sways me from my BlackBerry 9700… Photos in the gallery!
