So much of our entertainment in the 21st century is filled with CGI, from blockbuster motion pictures and cable TV shows to Internet shorts and fan films. With a decent computer, the right software and the prerequisite skills, anyone can dabble in computer animation, which explains why practical effects are less common than ever before.

That’s why we felt the need to share this incredibly cool video from Propadata Films that abandons special effects in favor of stop-motion. Using over 10,000 hex nuts, the filmmakers have put together a practical animation that’s not quite like anything we’ve ever seen before.
“No computer generated graphics, only frame by frame stop-motion…we pushed these hex nuts around for 2 weeks, 12hrs a day,” writes the Propadata team. “Hard, tedious work, but with fun results!”
