We’ve seen no shortage of videos showcasing the Tesla Model S taking on cars as varied as a McLaren 650S, a Challenger Hellcat, and even a Lamborghini Aventador. And while the Model S may not emerge victorious when pitted against a speed demon like the McLaren, it’s hardly a slouch in the speed department, at least as far as luxury cars go.
But what happens when a Tesla Model S takes on itself? Recently, DragTimes set to find out what happens when people stop being polite and start getting real. They also embarked to find out what happens when a brand new Tesla Model S P90D in “Ludicrous Mode” takes on a Tesla Model S P85D in “Insane mode.”

Originally unveiled this past July, Tesla boasts that “Ludicrous Mode” on the Model S improves acceleration by 10% and turns the car into a 762 horsepower speed demon. Specifically, “Ludicrous Mode” lowers the car’s 0-to-60 mph time to an impressive 2.8 seconds. Additionally, the time needed for the Model S to reach 155 mph is reduced by 20%.
As the video below demonstrates, a Model S in “Insane Mode” simply doesn’t stand a chance against Tesla’s top of the line sedan.
Interestingly enough, Tesla’s Model X, which the company plans to roll out later this month, will also come equipped with a “Ludicrous Mode” option. Buyers, of course, will have to pony up some extra cash if they want to enjoy that extra bit of kick off the starting line. With the extra heft that comes with the Model X, the vehicle’s 0-60 time reportedly checks in at 3.3 seconds, slower than the Model S but still not too shabby for an SUV.
