T-Mobile is reportedly working on a new application that could make phone unlocking a walk in the park, TmoNews reveals, and it could be sold as another advantage for the mobile operator, which is already making plenty of waves in the business.

The application will let smartphone users perform a simple unlock, although there’s apparently a big catch for the moment: the app will work only with certain Android handsets, and isn’t compatible with the iPhone.

The publication says that all a customer would have to do to unlock his or her device is to launch the “Device Unlock” app and hit “Continue.” The app will then connect the smartphone to a server and offer a choice between a temporary and permanent unlock. The phone should be unlocked after a reboot, no matter what choice the user picks.

However, while such an app makes sense for T-Mobile, considering its “Uncarrier” method of selling devices, it’s not clear when Device Unlock will be released. TmoNews says that according to its sources, nothing has been finalized yet, and the app is still in testing. The app could be preloaded on future devices, and the publication says it’s unlikely the app will be released as a free download through the Google Play Store.
